4. _B_u_g__F_i_x_e_s
The following ddddeeeesssskkkkttttoooopppp____eeeeooooeeee bugs have been fixed since IRIX
6.4:
+o The file manager (ffffmmmm) responds properly to down NFS
mounts without hanging. This allows other fm windows
to continue to update and respond to user actions when
an fm window on a downed NFS server cannot.
+o If both file manager (ffffmmmm) and imdmonitor were running
at the same time when the file alteration monitor (ffffaaaammmm)
crashed, then imdmonitor used to go into a tight loop
that would consume CPU resources. This has been fixed.
+o To improve default system security, SGI systems now
ship with remote display disabled. After upgrading to
IRIX 6.5, desktop users who want to be able to run an
application on a remote system but display the
application's windows on the local screen should select
Desktop > Customize > Desktop from the toolchest and
check the Enable Remote Display toggle. For more
information, see the _d_e_s_k_t_o_p(_1) and _d_i_s_a_b_l_e_X_h_o_s_t(_1) man
pages.
+o To give the user more secure control over their
display, the System > Utilities > Disable Remote
Display option disables remote display for each and
every host that currently has remote display enabled.
The Desktop > Customize > Desktop panel's Enable Remote
Display toggle will do the same when it is unchecked.
+o The layout of icons in desktop views is more reliable
(ex., the scroll position is now preserved, and the
LEGEND description appears as as the last field in View
As List). This includes fm windows and iconcatalog
pages. Also the menus have been reorganized.
+o In icon catalog, it was possible to have the icons
become tiny and illegible after changing the personal
or system language (LANG). This has been fixed.
- 2 -
+o Holding the Ctrl key while dragging a file icon from an
fm window to another fm window or to the desktop
background will create a copy of the file.
+o The /_v_a_r/_X_1_1/_x_d_m/_X_s_e_s_s_i_o_n._d_t script now displays
messages in the language specified by LC_MESSAGES as
returned by the _l_o_c_a_l_e(_1) command. Also, if the user
has their own ._x_s_e_s_s_i_o_n file, it will be executed in
the language specified by the LANG environment
variable.
+o A Desks Overview crash has been fixed. The application
is now also run-once, meaning that attempts to run it a
second time while it is already running will have the
effect of deiconifying the _o_v(_1) window and popping it
to the top. The ----nnnneeeewwww option can be used to create a
new instance.
+o If using the Desktop > Access Files > By Remote Login
panel and the remote system hangs, the Access Desktop
panel now does not itself hang so its "Connecting..."
dialog box can be cancelled.
+o The Desktop > Customize > Utilities panel now looks for
the Emacs text editor in /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_b_i_n/_e_m_a_c_s instead of
in /_u_s_r/_f_r_e_e_w_a_r_e/_b_i_n/_e_m_a_c_s.
+o The Desktop > Customize > Iconviews panel settings no
longer affect the iconcatalog.
+o Webjumper icons can be printed.
+o The sparkly visual launcheffect will not display if the
default visual is in the overlays and there is no
visual on top of that (ex., when running X Windows in
the overlay planes).
+o The Desktop > Customize > Sounds panel would crash if
the user double-clicked the Startup & Shutdown Tunes
toggle. This has been fixed.
- 3 -
+o When upgrading to IRIX 6.5, spurious output from
iconcatalog exitops will no longer appear in the
console.

releases, see the appropriate release's release notes.
